The Netherlands
The Netherlands, often referred to as Holland, is a country located in Northwestern Europe. It is known for its flat landscape, extensive canal systems, tulip fields, windmills, and cycling routes. The country is bordered by Germany to the east, Belgium to the south, and the North Sea to the north and west. The Netherlands also includes several overseas territories in the Caribbean, such as Aruba and Curaçao.
One of the most striking features of the Netherlands is its low elevation and flat topography. About a quarter of the country lies below sea level, and much of the land has been reclaimed from the sea through an intricate system of dikes, canals, and pumping stations. This land reclamation process has been ongoing since the medieval period and has allowed the Dutch to transform marshes and lakes into fertile agricultural land.
The Netherlands is renowned for its rich cultural heritage and contributions to art, science, and philosophy. It was the birthplace of famous artists like Vincent van Gogh and Rembrandt van Rijn. The country also played a significant role in the Age of Exploration and the development of international trade. Today, the Netherlands is a modern, prosperous nation with a high standard of living, known for its progressive social policies and strong emphasis on human rights.
Cycling culture
The Netherlands is renowned for its vibrant cycling culture, where bicycles are an integral part of daily life. With an extensive network of bike paths, dedicated lanes, and bike-friendly infrastructure, cycling is not just a mode of transportation but a way of life. From young children to the elderly, nearly everyone cycles, whether it’s for commuting, running errands, or leisure. The flat terrain and compact cities make it ideal for cycling, and the Dutch government actively promotes it as a sustainable and healthy alternative to driving.
Events like the annual “Fiets naar je Werk Dag” (Bike to Work Day) further highlight the importance of cycling in Dutch society. This deep-rooted cycling culture contributes to the Netherlands’ reputation as one of the most bike-friendly countries in the world. 🚲🌍
If you are interested in experiencing this culture yourself while attending the conference, you can check out the official Rotterdam's tourist information website for available options. Also, keep in mind that hotels might offer bike rental services themselves, so be sure to check if your accommodation provides that.
Mastering the waters
The Netherlands has a long history of battling the sea. With much of its land below sea level, the Dutch have developed an intricate system of dikes, storm surge barriers, and canals to keep the water at bay. Dikes, the first line of defense, are massive embankments that prevent flooding from rivers and the sea. These structures have been continually reinforced and expanded over the centuries, showcasing the Dutch commitment to protecting their land.
One of the most remarkable feats of Dutch engineering is the “stormvloedkering,” or storm surge barrier. The Oosterscheldekering, part of the Delta Works project, is a prime example. This barrier can be closed during severe storms to prevent the North Sea from inundating the southwestern provinces. It’s a testament to the Dutch ability to innovate and adapt to their challenging environment.
Canals are another vital component of the Netherlands’ water management strategy. These waterways not only facilitate transportation and trade but also play a crucial role in controlling water levels. By carefully managing the flow of water through an extensive network of canals, the Dutch can prevent flooding and ensure that their cities and farmlands remain dry. This harmonious relationship with water is a defining characteristic of the Netherlands, demonstrating how human ingenuity can overcome natural challenges.
