✈️Flying to the Netherlands

Conference participants are advised to fly to one of these 3 airports in the Netherlands:

  • Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS): Also known simply as Schiphol Airport. Schiphol is the main airport of the Netherlands, located 9 KM Southwest of Amsterdam. Participants can travel from this airport to Rotterdam Central Station by train, which takes between 35-50 minutes. Participants can also travel via taxi. For more details, click here.

  • Rotterdam The Hague Airport (RTM): This airport is a minor international airport that serves both the cities of Rotterdam and The Hague. It is located to the North of Rotterdam. Participants can travel from this airport to Rotterdam Central Station with bus 33, which takes around 25 minutes.

  • Eindhoven Airport (EIN): This airport is an international airport located 7.6 KM West of Eindhoven. Flights to Eindhoven Airport tend to be cheaper. Participants can travel to Rotterdam Central Station by bus (to Eindhoven Central Station) + train, which takes around 1.5-2 hours.

📍Travelling to the Conference Venue

To get from Rotterdam Central Station to the conference venue, participants can take:

  • Metros D/E to Zuidplein

  • Bus 44 to Zuidplein Hoog

🚇Public Transport in the Netherlands

Using public transport in a foreign country can oftentimes be confusing or even frustrating, especially when planning how to get from point A to point B. Luckily, public transport in the Netherlands is among one of the best organised and most efficient in Europe. Here are some suggestions of apps to use to plan your travels around the Netherlands:

  • NS Travel Planner: This is the official website of the principal passenger railway operator in the Netherlands, Nederlandse Spoorwegen or NS for short. Through this, you can plan your journey from and to anywhere in the Netherlands, at any time you wish to depart or arrive. It also offers the most up-to-date information about your trip. There is also a mobile app available which offers additional features such as ticket purchase or push notifications about your trip;

  • 9292: This is another famous app used by Dutch people to plan their trip with public transport, available both as a website and as an app;

  • Google Maps: If you prefer not to install additional apps on your phone, then Maps can also be used to plan your trip throughout the Netherlands. However, it does not always offer the best routes compared to the other two options and it is not as up-to-date. It is recommended to use Google Maps alongside one of the two options mentioned above to find the most optimal route.

  • NS International: for travelling by train from Brussels or Frankfurt please visit the NS International website.

💡Tips for Public Transport

Additionally, here are some tips to make the best out of your travel via public transport:

  • A new system called OVpay has been introduced in the Netherlands that allows travelers to pay for their journey using credit/debit cards. For more information about how it works, click here. OVpay works on any train, bus, metro, or tram in the Netherlands.

  • If you prefer to buy tickets instead:

    • For train tickets, you can either purchase them online from the NS app/website or at ticket vending machines in train stations (keep in mind that only card payments and coins are accepted as methods of payment at these vending machines).

    • For public transport around Rotterdam, click here. Usually, metro and tram tickets need to be purchased before taking the metro, whereas bus tickets can also be purchased at the bus driver.

  • If no delay is expected, make sure to board trains no later than 1 minute before the departure time;

  • When you hear the conductor blow a whistle near your train, that means that the train's doors will close. After the whistle blows, you cannot board the train anymore;

  • At bus stops and particularly those where multiple bus lines stop, it is recommended to wave your hand to the bus driver of the bus you intend to take so that the bus driver knows whether to stop to pick you up or not, in case no one gets off the bus at your stop.
